7 Reasons why you should upgrade to a CV carburetor

In this article, we show you several reasons why it might be worth your while to upgrade your old carburetor, your Harley-Davidson to a CV carburetor.

Harley Davidson started to equip models with the CV carburetor in 1989 and has been using the same carburetor ever since. Models before 1989 were still built with a butterfly carburetor, whose performance is rather weak compared to a CV carburetor. A CV (Constant Velocity) carburetor contains a vacuum-driven slide that varies the venturi size within the carburetor to maintain a constant velocity. The slide also holds a needle which, when lifted by the opening slide, varies the amount of atomized fuel supplied. Here are several reasons why it is worth upgrading your Harley-Davidson with a new carburetor.

1. The CV carburetor makes the motorcycle's performance much more consistent.

2. Harley-Davidson motorcycles before 1989 used a standard butterfly carburetor and are excellent candidates for upgrading to the newer CV carburetor.

3. A Harley CV carburetor far surpasses the performance of its butterfly-shaped predecessors, the Keihin, Zenith and Bendix

4. Retrofitting is quite simple and requires only a flange adapter between carburetor and manifold on most models.

5. Harley's used before 1989 have a manifold with two screw flanges, while a CV carburettor is simply put on a rubber sleeve and held in place by the backplate of the air filter.

6. A complete conversion should not cost more than 200 Euro.

7. The conversion can usually be done by yourself and a specialist workshop is not required.

Please note that the carburetor for the conversion should be in known operating condition (if used) and contain an enrichment cable (choke). The choke used with a butterfly carburetor is different and therefore does not work for this conversion.
