Harley Davidson WLA - The story behind the bike

by John Huijsman

My name is John Huijsman and I am from Goirle, the Netherlands.
This beautiful Harley Davidson WLA 1942 has actively participated in World War 2. I have been able to trace this on the basis of the chassis number!

This Harley Davidson 1942 WLA bike had been in a storage unit hidden away from everybody for more than 27 years. The owner of the Harley Davidson WLA was 87 years of age and had no desire to ride the bike anymore.

After more than 25 years in a shure guard locker I took it to a Harley Davidson specialist, Motormechanica. Cees, the then owner and top specialist in old Harley's, had it running in 3 days. All the oil was gone and there was no fluid left anywhere.

He needed a couple of days to investigate everything. Carburetor and tanks where cleaned, and new gasoline filter was placed, and all the necessary oils where filled.

Then the clutch plates were replaced with original asbestos Harley plates. The Head gasket was replaced, valves set and everything was checked and recalibrated. Also the entire carburetor had had an ultrasonic bath and came out like new!

All in all, the renovation took about 2 years and was well worth it!

The Harley Davidson wla runs top and participates in several organized "wheels" rides each year. To date the WLA has been to Normandy 2 times and visited all the sights there. All around these places the Harley gets lots of interest from connoisseurs and overall enthusiasts.
